BEFORE IV SEDATION
- You may not have anything to eat for six (6) hours prior to the appointment. You may have eight (8) ounces of clear liquid up until three (3) hours before your surgery to take any regular medications. Acceptable clear fluids include water, Gatorade, 7-Up, Sprite and apple juice. To do otherwise may be life-threatening.
- No smoking at least twelve (12) hours before surgery. Ideally, stop smoking two months prior to the day of surgery.
- Please wear loose fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes.
- Contact lenses, jewelry and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
- Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup or nail polish on the day of surgery.
- If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset, please notify the office.
- If you are taking routine oral medications, please take them with a small sip of water.
AFTER IV SEDATION
- A responsible adult must accompany you to the office, drive you home and stay with you until you are fully alert. This may be up to 24 hours.
- You should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the anesthesia experience.
- Plan to take it easy and do not perform any strenuous or hazardous activities after the procedure. Avoid making important decisions and being active for the rest of the day. Though you may feel fine, your judgment and reflexes may be slowed.
- Don’t eat a heavy meal immediately. Start by drinking liquids and then advance to a light meal (soup, yogurt, smoothie, toast etc).
- Take pain medications when you start to feel some discomfort – if the pain medications upset your stomach take them with food.
- Do not take alcohol.
