SMIKE MAKEOVER FAQS

Some of the details to consider and questions to ask about smile makeovers include:

What’s in a Smile Makeover?

A smile makeover is an individualized cosmetic dentistry treatment plan, which involves a combination of dental procedures with the end goal of creating a beautiful, appealing and healthy smile. This is not a journey to be embarked upon lightly, though the destination is a stunning, photogenic smile.

Tooth whitening is often part of a smile makeover. Virtually everyone can achieve dramatic results with whitening, especially using our Deep Bleaching™ process that sets a new bright shade of white for your smile. Then, if you go on to have any porcelain veneers, white fillings or porcelain crowns, Dr. Thurman can match the porcelain to this new color.

Any of the most common cosmetic dental problems can be treated as part of a smile makeover. If you have some missing teeth, the best solution is one or more dental implants, which will fill both the visible gap left by the lost tooth and the invisible gap where the roots were. Dental implants with their attached replacement teeth take care of both health and beauty.

What Should I Expect at My Smile Makeover Consultation?

Dr. Thurman will discuss your options with you, and together you can determine a plan. He will then recommend the best timing and sequence. We can use computer smile imaging to let you preview your new smile before any work is started. In some cases, a full mouth reconstruction is a better option than a smile makeover.

Computer smile imaging is a crucial element of any successful smile makeover. We will use this advanced technology to project the appearance of your new smile, providing you with a glimpse into the future of your dental health.

We can help you set a timeframe so that you’ll be ready for upcoming special occasions. We offer a number of financing options to help your smile makeover fit within your budget as well.

Every patient is unique, and so is every smile. As a result, there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all smile makeover. What worked for the patient before you might not work for you. And we recognize this. So, your smile makeover begins in the obvious place — with you.

We will engage you in a conversation, not a lecture. We’ll ask you questions about your goals and priorities, then answer any questions you might have for us. When combined with a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and bite, this information will prove invaluable.

When deciding which procedures to perform, we’ll also take into account your overall state of oral and general health. You’ll need to have a good foundation of sound, healthy gums before we can move forward with these procedures.

Ultimately, the shape of your smile makeover will be determined by the shape of your dental problems. Our cosmetic procedures are targeted at addressing specific concerns, and this will play a role in our recommendations. We can answer your other cosmetic dentistry questions as well.

Who Is a Candidate for a Smile Makeover?

If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your smile, you are likely a good candidate for a smile makeover. An ideal candidate:

Has a number of serious cosmetic dental problems. Because a smile makeover requires a range of procedures, it’s only appropriate for patients who are dealing with a range of problems that are best fixed in a short period of time.

Is in sound overall health. All of the procedures that our Lakewood cosmetic dentist can utilize as part of a smile makeover have impressive safety records, but a compromised immune system or active infection can increase the odds of complications.

Does not suffer from gum disease. Healthy gums are the foundation for any dental work, and Dr. Thurman will make sure your gums are sound before we move forward with any cosmetic procedure.
Possesses reasonable expectations for the procedures. A smile makeover can offer extraordinary improvement in your smile, but it’s important you understand what you can expect from it. Computer smile imaging will help with this.

The good news is that if you are a candidate for a smile makeover, you’ll be able to trust in Dr. Thurman’s experience and skill. You can view our smile makeover gallery for examples of actual patients who have had their lives improved by Dr. Thurman’s work.

What Dental Services Are Included in a Smile Makeover?

As we mentioned above, a smile makeover can involve any number of cosmetic treatments and procedures. The exact treatments included in your smile makeover depend on your unique cosmetic goals for your smile. Some of the more common treatments include:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Dental crowns
  • Porcelain veneers
  • White fillings
  • Dental implants

What Dental Problems Does a Smile Makeover Fix?

Your smile makeover is a personalized treatment plan, so it will address any oral health issues or cosmetic dentistry problems you would like to improve. Smile makeovers commonly fix:

  • Stained, yellowed teeth
  • Cracked, chipped teeth
  • Crooked, misaligned teeth
  • Missing teeth
  • Uneven teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Decayed and damaged teeth
  • Gummy smile
  • Replacing old metal fillings with white fillings

How Do I Decide What Treatments to Include?

Prior to your consultation, you may want to take some time to consider what you would like to improve about your smile. When you meet with Dr. Thurman, you should point out your areas of dissatisfaction and explain what you would like to see changed. Dr. Thurman can discuss all the treatments that will accomplish your goals, and then you can decide which ones are right for your expectations, budget and other deciding factors.

Creating Your Smile Design and Wax Up

Dr. Thurman will take an impression of your teeth and talk with you about your desired changes. He will then send the impression off to the lab so that your wax up can be constructed. The process generally takes several weeks to complete. If minimal adjustments need to be made after you view the wax model, these changes can be incorporated into the final results.

Your wax model will be an excellent tool to help Dr. Thurman achieve results that more accurately reflect your cosmetic dentistry goals within the realistic parameters of what can be made. The wax model will also use a bite simulator to replicate how your teeth will move when biting, which is very helpful when evaluating the strength needed for your restoration.

The bite simulator provides an added benefit not found in other smile simulation methods used by Dr. Thurman such as Smile-Vision. Smile-Vision creates a computer-generated simulation of your new smile and therefore does not account for the physical attainability of the changes. In contrast, your wax up is a 3-dimensional simulation that gives a realistic, accurate description of the final result.

You will benefit from a smile design and wax up if you are undergoing just about any cosmetic procedure. Dr. Thurman frequently uses a wax model as a tool when performing porcelain veneers, smile makeovers and dental implants.

Dr. Thurman generally considers the wax up to be an especially necessary part of the porcelain veneers process if four or more veneers are being installed. The day your veneers are started, the wax simulation will be used to construct your temporary veneers. When you go home from this initial office visit, you will essentially have a new smile in place while you wait for the permanent restoration to be completed at the lab.

If you are replacing a missing lateral tooth with a dental implant, your wax replica can pre-design the lateral crown so that Dr. Thurman can determine the ideal location for the implant. This will ensure that you achieve ideal aesthetic results.

I had a long overdue deep cleaning, root canal/crown, AND fillings within a month. Dr. Thurman, Morgan, Kathy and staff were very attentive and kind with not ONLY the procedures and explanations but with checking up on me after the root canal. Also great at helping me figure out my insurance coverage and payments. Dental Elements is GREAT.
